Introduction to Floristry
A 12-week online programme from Orvexax that takes you from identifying common blooms to composing arrangements with confidence. Designed for remote learners across South Africa, with practical assignments you complete using locally available materials.
Six modules, one clear progression
Plant Identification
Learn to name and distinguish 40 common cut flowers and foliage types. You will study seasonal availability, stem structure, and how each variety behaves in water over time.
Colour Theory in Arrangements
Colour relationships in floristry differ from painting. This module covers analogous, complementary, and tonal palettes as they apply to fresh flower combinations and how light changes perception.
Conditioning and Care
Proper stem preparation, water chemistry, and storage temperatures extend vase life significantly. You will work through conditioning protocols used by working florists in warm climates.
Hand-Tied Bouquets
The hand-tied technique is the foundation of most commercial floristry work. Step-by-step video guides walk you through spiral stem placement, binding, and finishing for different bouquet weights.
Structured Arrangements
Working with foam-free and foam mechanics, you will build centrepieces, table designs, and asymmetric compositions. Each assignment uses materials available at regional garden centres.
Final Project and Feedback
Submit a documented arrangement of your choice — photographs, material list, and a short written rationale. You receive written feedback from a programme tutor within five working days.
How the learning actually works
Each module opens on a Monday and stays accessible permanently — there are no expiry dates on your content. You watch demonstration videos, read reference material, and then complete a practical task using flowers you source locally. Assignments are photo-submitted through the platform and reviewed by a tutor, not automated scoring.
The programme has been structured so that someone working full-time can complete each week's content in around four to five hours. There are no live sessions, so your timezone and schedule do not matter. Participants from Limpopo to the Western Cape have completed it without needing to travel or coordinate with others.
Programme time breakdown
The time estimates above are averages. Participants with no prior craft experience tend to spend more time on the conditioning and hand-tied modules. Those with a background in visual arts often move through colour theory faster. The platform tracks your progress automatically so you always know where you are.
